Rising early, like Jesus
A Jesus morning routine for ordinary days
Before the crowds, before the noise — a quiet place, and a conversation with the Father.
What scripture shows us
Mark 1:35 records it plainly: "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." Luke 5:16 adds that he "often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." The Gospels never give a checklist — but they reveal a pattern: rising early, finding solitude, and praying before the demands of the day arrived.
Four habits to borrow
- Rise a little earlier. Even fifteen minutes before the house wakes gives you room to be unhurried.
- Find a quiet place. A chair by a window, a porch, a short walk — somewhere set apart.
- Pray honestly. Jesus taught simple, direct prayer (Matthew 6:6–13). Speak plainly about the day ahead.
- Dwell in a verse. Read one passage slowly and carry a single line with you into the morning.
From prayer to purpose
Jesus' quiet mornings were followed by clear decisions — in Mark 1:38 he tells his disciples, "Let us go somewhere else… That is why I have come." Stillness clarified his direction. A morning routine shaped the same way ends with one small, faithful step you can take today.
